A man charged with shooting another man in the stomach on Saturday was arrested this morning by the Hudson County Sheriff's Office and members of a federal Homeland Security task force.
Juawan Ford, 20, was arrested at without incident at his Garden Terrace home in Jersey City at about 9:40 a.m. on the charges of attempted murder and weapons offenses related to a .22 caliber revolver, Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari said.
On Saturday at about 6:35 p.m. sheriff's officers responded to Mercer Park on the Jersey City/Bayonne border on a report of a shooting but found nothing. Officers then learned an ambulance had been dispatched to the Sterling Avenue home of a 21-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen, Schillari said.
The sheriff said the victim's father had been at the park and had driven his son home before an ambulance was called. After officers canvassed the neighborhood and interviewed numerous people, including the victim, a warrant for Ford's arrest was issued, Schillari said, adding that a gun was not recovered.
"Our top priority is the safety of the people who live here, work here, travel here and use county facilities," Schillari said. "People must be able to enjoy our parks safely."
The victim underwent emergency surgery and is recovering in an area hospital. Meanwhile, Ford has another case pending in Superior Court.
